Valerian is an herb that is commonly used in supplements, most often to treat insomnia. It is not clear as to how valerian works to help with insomnia, but it may affect a certain chemical in the brain that produces a naturally calming effect. Potential side effects include excitability, headaches, and morning drowsiness. Prior to taking valerian, talk to your healthcare provider about any other medical conditions you have and any other medications you are taking.
