Tryptophan Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when tryptophan is combined with any of the drugs listed above.
 
Antidepressants
Taking tryptophan with prescription antidepressants can cause a group of symptoms called serotonin syndrome. This is a group of dangerous symptoms that includes confusion, hallucinations, fast heartbeat, feeling faint, fever, sweating, muscle spasms, difficulty walking, and diarrhea. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking tryptophan and a depression medication together. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any symptoms of serotonin syndrome, as it can be very dangerous.
 
Benzodiazepines
Combining tryptophan with a benzodiazepine may cause problems such as sexual side effects or uncontrollable muscle movements. Check with your healthcare provider before taking tryptophan with a benzodiazepine medication.
 
Meperidine (Demerol)
Taking meperidine with tryptophan may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. Do not combine meperidine with tryptophan without your healthcare provider's approval.
 
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
Taking tryptophan and an MAOI together can cause life-threatening side effects. Never take an MAOI and tryptophan together.
 
Phenothiazines
Combining tryptophan with a phenothiazine may cause problems such as sexual side effects or uncontrollable muscle movements. Check with your healthcare provider before taking tryptophan with a phenothiazine medication.
 
St. John's Wort
Taking tryptophan with St. John's wort can cause a group of symptoms called serotonin syndrome. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medications together. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any symptoms of serotonin syndrome (see above), as it can be very dangerous.
