Melatonin Drug Interactions

Benzodiazepines
Combining melatonin with benzodiazepines can increase your risk of side effects, such as drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Serious side effects may also occur. Make sure to talk to your healthcare provider before taking melatonin with a benzodiazepine.

Calcium Channel Blockers
One study showed that melatonin can interfere with the effects of one particular calcium channel blocker. If you take a calcium channel blocker, it may be a good idea to avoid melatonin.

Diabetes Medications
Melatonin may interfere with the ability of diabetes medications to control your blood sugar. Make sure to check with your healthcare provider before taking melatonin with any diabetes medications. You may need to monitor your blood sugar more closely, and the dose of your diabetes medication may need to be adjusted.

Hormonal Contraceptives
Taking melatonin with hormonal contraceptives increases the amount of melatonin in your blood, which may increase your risk of melatonin side effects. Your healthcare provider may recommend a lower melatonin dosage or recommend that you avoid the supplement altogether.

Narcotics or Opiates
Combining an opiate or narcotic with melatonin can increase your risk of side effects, such as drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Serious side effects may also occur. Make sure to talk to your healthcare provider before taking melatonin with an opiate or narcotic.

Other Sleep Medications
Combining melatonin with other sleep medications can increase your risk of side effects, such as drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Serious side effects may also occur. Make sure to talk to your healthcare provider before taking melatonin with another sleep medication.
