As with any medicine, Silenor® (doxepin tablets) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Silenor. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)
Silenor has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in the group of people taking Silenor were documented and then compared to the side effects that occurred in a similar group of people taking a placebo (a "sugar pill" with no active ingredients).
In these studies, the most common bothersome (but not usually dangerous) side effects of this drug included:
- Daytime drowsiness -- in up to 9 percent of people
- Upper respiratory tract infections (such as the common cold) -- up to 4 percent
- High blood pressure (hypertension) -- up to 3 percent
- Nausea -- up to 2 percent
- Gastroenteritis (commonly known as the "stomach flu") -- up to 2 percent.
Dizziness also occurred "frequently" (in at least 1 percent of people), although the exact percentage was not reported.
