Silenor Medication Information

Silenor® (doxepin tablets) is available only by prescription and is approved for treating insomnia. Specifically, this medicine is used to help people with insomnia stay asleep (rather than helping them fall asleep). This insomnia drug is not appropriate for everyone; your healthcare provider needs up-to-date information on your medical history and what medications you are taking before prescribing Silenor.

Although many people do not have any problems while taking this medicine, Silenor can cause side effects, such as daytime drowsiness, upper respiratory tract infections, and high blood pressure. If negative reactions do occur, they tend to be mild and easily treated.

Silenor comes in tablet form and is taken within 30 minutes of bedtime. Do not take your dosage within three hours of a meal. If you do take Silenor close to a meal, it will take longer to work and may result in more drowsiness the next day.
