California Poppy Side Effects

Although very few side effects have been reported from people taking California poppy, this does not mean that this herb is free from side effects. California poppy has not been extensively studied. However, in one study where magnesium and hawthorn were combined with California poppy, side effects were reported. These included nausea, muscle stiffness, and morning sluggishness. Some people may also experience allergic reactions from California poppy.

Does California Poppy Cause Side Effects?

As with any medication or supplement, California poppy can cause side effects. Although some people assume that natural products (such as California poppy) are automatically free of side effects, this is simply not the case. Remember, many poisons and toxins are natural products, and any natural product (especially those used medicinally) can cause side effects.

Possible California Poppy Side Effects

Almost no side effects of California poppy have been reported. However, this probably reflects the lack of studies that have been performed on California poppy (as most information on potential side effects for drugs and supplements comes from clinical studies); it probably does not really mean that California poppy is free of side effects.

In one study, a combination of California poppy, magnesium, and hawthorn for the treatment of anxiety caused the following side effects (which may or may not be caused by California poppy):

  • Nausea
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Morning sluggishness.

Of course, as a flowering plant, California poppy can cause allergic reactions. Be sure to seek medical attention immediately if you have any signs of an allergic reaction, such as:

  • A rash or hives
  • Itching
  • Swelling of the mouth or throat
  • Wheezing or difficulty breathing.
