Ambien Over-the-Counter (OTC)

Ambien® (zolpidem tartrate) is a sleep medication approved for the treatment of short-term insomnia in adults. At this time, you cannot get Ambien over-the-counter (OTC); the sleep aid is available by prescription only. It comes in tablet form and is available in both brand-name and generic forms (generic Ambien products are not available over-the-counter either).

Ambien is part of a class of medications called sedative/hypnotics. Based on clinical studies, when compared to people who did not take the drug, people who took Ambien:

  • Fell asleep faster
  • Slept longer
  • Had higher-quality sleep
  • Had fewer awakenings.

Since this medication works quickly, make sure you are ready for sleep before taking it (Ambien is often taken immediately before bedtime). Do not take the sleep medication before driving or performing any tasks that require concentration. This medicine is generally used for only one to two days; it should not be used for more than one to two weeks.
