Ambien® (
zolpidem tartrate) is a sleep medication often prescribed for the treatment of
insomnia in adults. It has been shown to help people fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, wake up less often throughout the night, and have a higher quality of sleep. Ambien comes in tablet form and is available in both 5-mg and 10-mg strengths.
The recommended starting dose of Ambien is 10 mg, taken immediately before bed. People who have liver disease, are taking other medicines that affect the brain, or are older may need to start with Ambien 5 mg tablets.
In general, Ambien is used for only one to two days. It should not be used for more than one to two weeks. If you are still having trouble sleeping after this time, talk with your healthcare provider.
